Friday, November 20, 2020 | 7:00 p.m.

As part of our COVID-friendly celebrations, we are co-creating a musical playlist for Pauli Murray's 110th birthday. The playlist includes musical selections that:

  • Bring you Birthday joy

  • Make you feel good

  • Remind you of Pauli Murray

  • Invoke the kind of world Pauli believed in and worked for.

We hope you'll join in the fun and participate as you're able: offer a song, play the music, sing and dance along, and celebrate Pauli.

Saturday, November 21, 2020 | 12-3 p.m.
906 Carroll Street.

Led by Courtney Reid-Eaton & Jesse Huddleston

Please join us at the Center (906 Carroll Street in Durham, NC) for the construction of a LABYRINTH dedicated to Loss, Hope and Joy.

Bring shoes, rocks, bricks, ceramics, crockery, artificial flowers… whatever represents your loss/hope/joy.

THIS year....the year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the year of “racial reckoning,” the year of a(nother) world changing election in the United States of America…celebration feels more important than ever.

LOSS + HOPE + JOY are the story of ALL Black Lives.

Black Lives Matter. ALL Black Lives Matter. Queer Black Lives Matter. Black Trans Lives Matter. Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray’s Life Matters.

A labyrinth is a sacred space; a Spiritual tool; a process of pilgrimage; a map for loss and renewal; a guide for healing and growth.

We will be masked and practicing safe physical distancing–to receive offerings to be part of the  labyrinth. We intend it to be a long-term installation at the site.

Bring shoes, rocks, bricks, ceramics, crockery, artificial flowers… whatever represents your loss/hope/joy. Please do not bring fragile glass objects, but feel free to bring multiple objects, being mindful that they will remain outside, in the weather for several months. They may be decorated, inscribed, or they may speak as they are.

Participation in this event is meant to be brief—10 minute visits, please. Drop off your object(s) enjoy a refreshment, and leave with a gift, including an offering from artist and MacArthur Award recipient, Carrie Mae Weems’ recent project, RESIST COVID/TAKE SIX!https://nasher.duke.edu/exhibitions/resist-covid-take-six/presented by The Nasher Museum of Art, in collaboration with Duke Arts and Duke Health.
