Charlotte-based artist SJ Willis, and 2023 Firebrand Sophie Yost talk about SJ's work "Mind in Flux", queer identity, and the inspiration behind SJ's art. "Mind in Flux" is a striking mix of revolution and reflection through the lens of Black, queer identity and emotions.

The Pauli Murray Center for History and Social Justice is located at 906 Carroll Street, Durham, NC 27701.

We are open on Saturdays and Wednesdays for public tours. Please see our calendar for weekly hours and events, including tours, programs, and community gatherings. Private tours and space rentals can be requested on any day of the week.

Robert and Cornelia Fitzgerald, Pauli Murray's grandparents, took Pauli in as a young child. After the death of Pauli's mother, Murray came to live with Robert and Cornelia, along with Aunt Pauline, at their home on Carroll Street in Durham, NC. As a On Mother's Day 1978, Pauli Murray delivered a powerful sermon at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Durham, titled "The Gifts of the Holy Spirit From Women I Have Known."
